New York City Event to Honor Coast Guard National Security Cutter Bertholf

The Coast Guard Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to the education and welfare of all Coast Guard members and their families, announced today that its Attendees will be industry and public officials, including the Commandant, senior officials, officers and enlisted members of the Coast Guard. At the event, the Foundation will present the National Award for Heroism to the crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Bertholf and will also recognize Morton S. Bouchard III, President and CEO of Bouchard Transportation.

The first of six highly capable U.S. Coast Guard National Security Cutters in active duty, Bertholf is one of the most successful Coast Guard assets to date. Over a 16-month deployment from December 2014 to April 2016, the crew of the Bertholf engaged in unmanned aerial vehicle testing, counter-drug operations and multi-national exercises. Breaking new ground in December, 2014, Bertholf was the first Coast Guard ship to successfully launch and recover a U.S. Navy Fire Scout unmanned helicopter – advancing the Coast Guard’s ambitions for cutter-based unmanned aerial reconnaissance systems. Also, during three counter-drug patrols, the Bertholf performed 32 law enforcement interdictions. Most notably, the crew accomplished two self-propelled semi-submersible vessel interdictions – including one highly successful, nighttime operation – that combined yielded 12,669 kilograms of cocaine. In all over the 16-month period, the cutter detained 82 suspected narco-traffickers and seized 28,187 kilograms of contraband valued at over $985 million. These efforts are responsible for over 10% of the Coast Guard’s total cocaine seizures in 2015.

Displaying exceptional working acumen and stamina the crew of the Bertholf frequently maintained an extraordinarily high operational tempo as well as superior effectiveness while underway through a combination of keen preventative engineering practices and ingenious casualty repairs that were performed while the vessel was in theater. Additionally, Bertholf crew members demonstrated sincere commitment to their community and families through a variety of support and outreach efforts, including the United Through Reading program, maintenance of a popular unit Facebook page and several initiatives to recognize deserving shipmates. In attendance on behalf of the Bertholf will be CAPT Laura Collins, LCDR James Terrell, OS2 David Castillo, BM2 Walker Stippel, LCDR Jessica Davila, LT Christopher Branning, AMT2 Joel Edwards, AMT2 Darryl Blackall, OS1 Ryan Morgan, MK1 Adam Novotny, MK2 Jeremy Luabena, MK3 Brianne Fechner and GMCS Todd Milyard. The professionalism, pride and devotion to duty displayed by the crew of Bertholf are in keeping with the highest traditions of the Coast Guard.

Morton S. Bouchard, III of Bouchard Transportation has been a leader in supporting the Coast Guard Foundation’s mission and policies for more than two decades. Serving as a Trustee for the Coast Guard Foundation from 1998 to 2013, Bouchard’s support and leadership has been critical for expansion of the Foundation’s education, morale and relief programs. As a result of his significant investment into the Coast Guard Foundation’s scholarships, the Foundation has been able to expand this program to award more than 80 scholarships in 2015 and almost 130 in 2016 to Coast Guard dependents. Bouchard was the top scholarship investor in 2015. In addition to scholarships, Bouchard invests heavily into the Coast Guard Foundation’s Fallen Heroes program. This program is critical for the Foundation to provide support to families who have lost loved ones in the line of duty, and to make sure the children of these fallen heroes attend college and graduate debt free.

“The men and women of the Coast Guard are on-call every day, often in harms way and occasionally far from home,” said Anne Brengle, president, Coast Guard Foundation. “The tireless dedication of these individuals rarely receives recognition and we are humbled to be able to honor the excellence of one such crew, that of the Cutter Bertholf. Also, through the support of noted and generous individuals including Mort Bouchard, we are able to do our small part to give back to the crew of the Bertholf and their families and thank them for keeping our nation safe.”
