Following a summer of competitive area finals and a national final that proved to be a real nail biter, it was victory for Jamie Paterson, age 12 from Findhorn Marina, Scotland and Kamila Czartolomna, age 15 from South Staffs Sailing Club, Midlands who powered through to be crowned Honda RYA Youth RIB Champions 2016.

The competitors beat off stiff competition from 25 other youngsters from around the country to win their respective classes and clinch this year’s coveted titles at the national final held at the Southampton Boat Show yesterday (25 September 2016).

In the 8-12 category Jamie put in a winning time of 0.58.31, just over a second faster than Tom Rogers from the Royal Lymington Yacht Club, South who finished in 2nd place (0.59.81). While Kamila raced home with a winning time of 0.56.19 in the 13-16 age group, stealing the top spot from Matthew Le Vasseur from Guernsey Yacht Club, Channel Islands who clinched 2nd place.

Both winners skilfully manoeuvred a tricky and testing course including a slalom, stopping and reversing around a mark and a blast to the finish line.

Speaking of her win Kamila commented: “Amazing, I can’t believe I’ve won for a second time.  Conditions were windy and with big waves which made it quite tricky out on the water.  I’m looking forward to coming back for the Champion of Champions next year.”

Jamie commented:  “Conditions were a little rough, but similar to what I train in back home.  The hours of practice have paid off.”

Presenting the prizes at this year’s event was Top Gear’s Rory Reid who was joined by Steve Morris from Honda UK and Steve Harrison from Highfield. Jamie wins a Honwave T40 RIB with a BF20 engine for their club, while Kamila wins a Highfield 460 RIB with a Honda BF50 engine.

After the prize giving it was back out on the water for Kamila as she took on 13 year old George Baxter representing Girton Sailing Club for the perpetual Champion of Clubs trophy. It was a close call out on the water but in the end it was Kamila who was once again victorious and claimed the trophy on behalf of her club, South Staffordshire Sailing Club.

RYA Powerboat Projects Manager Andrew Norton said: “In challenging conditions today everyone has done fantastically well.  It’s great to see some new clubs and faces competing here today and we are delighted that the championship is going from strength to strength. Our thanks go to Championship sponsors Honda and Highfield for their continued support.”

Head of Power Equipment for Honda (UK), Steve Morris, commented: “Each year the standard gets better and better.  It is really important for us to encourage young people to discover the fun of boating and learn to do it safely.

“For me personally it is always great to see at the prize giving how the event builds the competitors confidence and their engagement.”

Now in its fifteenth year, the Honda RYA Youth RIB Championship is Britain’s leading programme introducing kids to powerboats and training them to be safe, proficient drivers and excellent boat handlers.

RIBs are light, manoeuvrable craft and the boats driven in the Honda RYA Youth RIB Championship can hit speeds of up to 25mph. For more information about the Honda RYA Youth RIB Championship and full results from the 2016 National final visit www.rya.org.uk/go/hondayouthrib
