Sail for Hope

October 15th, 2016

Join us October 15th as we support the Red Cross Armed Forces Fund, The Edward Oliver (Tad) Sanchez Memorial Fund at Sail Newport and the Warrior Sailing Program in this year's Sail for Hope.

The 16th annual Sail for Hope marks the end of the Newport Sailing Season with a "Last Blast" Around Conanicut Island!

In 2001, in the wake of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, Pentagon, and in the skies over Pennsylvania, a few local sailing enthusiasts scrambled to organize a regatta to honor and support those affected.

The first Sail For Pride Regatta rallied over 180 boats and $110,000 designated for charities to support the NYFD firefighters, police and the victims of the attacks and their families.

The display of patriotism and generosity on and off the water made a lasting impression in the sailing community.  After the inaugural year, the organizers retired the name Sail for Pride, but continued the event as Sail For Hope, reflecting the Rhode Island state motto and aimed at supporting local charities.  Charities supported over the years have included RI Red Cross, Seamen's Church Institute, Newport Harbormaster's Emergency Equipment Fund, local public high school sailing teams, US Olympic Sailing Trials and many more, including a huge fund-raising year in 2005 after Hurricane Katrina's devastation of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast.

Unfortunately due to the inclement weather, we had to cancel the 2015 Sail for Hope Regatta, but still held the fundraiser at the IYAC. Racers chose to donate their entry fees between the RI Red Cross and the Warrior Sailing Program.

To date, nearly $1,000,000 has been raised (since 2001) for various charities.

A party will be held at the Newport Shipyard after sailing.  Join us for awards, trophies and an auction to help support the RI Red Cross Armed Forces Fund, The Edward Oliver (Tad) Sanchez Fund and the Warrior Sailing Program.

Please bring your friends and families to help support these great causes. Extra wristbands will be available in advance or at the door for $30.00.
