ITS Carabiniere Receives Recognition Award for Counter-Piracy Protection of UNFAO Vessel Along Somali Coast

During her port visit to Dar es Salaam, Operation Atalanta flagship ITS Carabiniere, was presented with an UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (UNFAO) award for the protection she provided to an UNFAO vessel as it deployed Fishing Aggregation Devices (FADs).

Operation Atalanta Ships Conduct Joint Training with Chinese Navy

On 27 February, Operation Atalanta and Chinese warships conducted joint training in the Indian Ocean. The training included air operations with the ships’ embarked helicopters.

Spanish Maritime Air Patrol Team Clocks up Impressive 8,000 Flying Hours with Operation Atalanta off the Coast of Somalia

On Friday 11 March 2016 the Spanish Maritime Patrol and Reconnaissance Aircraft (MPRA), which is currently deployed off the coast of Somalia, landed at its base in Djibouti after completing another flying mission along Somalia’s coastline.

FGS Erfurt Hosts Operation Atalanta Force Commander

Operation Atalanta’s Force Commander, Rear Admiral Stefano Barbieri, has paid a visit to German warship, FGS Erfurt, as he prepares to hand over his command of the Atalanta Force HQ to Rear Admiral Kaack from the German Navy on Wednesday 23 March.

Maritime Patrol Capability Increases for Operation Atalanta with In-chop of German Aircrew

On 11 March, Op Atalanta’s Maritime Patrol and Reconnaissance Aircraft (MPRA) capability was doubled with the arrival of the German P-3C aircraft in Djibouti. The German team join the Spanish P-3 Detachment already in situ.

Operation Atalanta Flagship ITS Carabiniere Keeps Watchful Eye Over UN FAO ‘Fish Beacons’ at Sea that are Helping to Increase Catches for Somali Fishermen

At the end of 2015, Operation Atalanta protected a UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (UNFAO) vessel, MV Kestrel, from potential pirate attack as it deployed twenty five Fishing Aggregation Devices (FADs) off the coast of Somalia.

Italian Air Force Supports Spanish Maritime Air Detachment Deployed with Operation Atalanta

Earlier this week an Italian C-130J Hercules aircraft based in Pisa was tasked by the European Air Transport Command (EATC) to fly to Djibouti to deliver a spare engine for Operation Atalanta’s Spanish Maritime Patrol and Reconnaissance Aircraft (MPRA) Detachment that has been based in Djibouti since Operation Atalanta was launched by the European Union in December 2008.

Crew Change For The Spanish Maritime Patrol Team

On 22 March, the XXIV Spanish Air Force contingent handed over maritime patrol and reconnaissance duties to the incoming XXV Detachment. The new crew will continue to operate the P-3 aircraft.

Force Commander Meets Vessel Protection Team

During a rendezvous with World Food Programme ship MSM Douro, Operation Atalanta’s Force Commander, Rear Admiral Jan Kaack, took the opportunity to address the embarked Autonomous Vessel Protection Detachment (AVPD). MSM Douro’s AVPD are currently a team from Lithuania and the Force Commander wished them a Happy Easter in the middle of the Gulf of Aden.

EU Naval Force (EU NAVFOR) Somalia - Operation Atalanta is part of the EU's comprehensive approach to tackle symptoms and root causes of piracy off the coast of Somalia and the EU Strategic Framework for the Horn of Africa adopted in November 2011.

EU NAVFOR conducts anti-piracy operations off the coast of Somalia and the Indian Ocean and is responsible for the protection of World Food Programme (WFP) shipping carrying humanitarian aid to the people of Somalia and Horn of Africa as well as the logistic shippings supporting the African Union troops conducting Peace Support Operations in Somalia (AMISOM). Additionally, Operation Atalanta contributes to the monitoring of fishing activity off the coast of Somalia.
